POETRY – My Ireland by Steven James Smith

I’ve just been introduced to the poetry of Steven James Smith (@SJSWords), a Dublin born poet and playwrite.

This poem was commissioned last year by the St Patrick’s Festival, who wanted something new that would celebrate and reflect the Ireland of today. This must have exceeded their wildest dreams!

The piece is incredibly relatable and I winced, laughed out loud and even managed a somber moment during the recitation. I can only imagine how much more someone better informed about Ireland and her recent history would take from it.

Stephen James Smith is an Artist in Resident for Dunamaise Arts Centre and Laois Arts Office. During his tenure, he will be developing Laois’ first Spoken Word Project for young people.

His debut colection Fear Not will be out later this year, so if this tickles your fancy, keep your eyes peeled!
