In another of my ‘when fandoms collide’ moments – author, radio presenter, stand up and classicist Natalie Haynes has just created a thread pairing Taylor Swift songs with goddesses from the pantheon!
Hooray! And ht to @ StefArchivist who sent me this first thing, knowing I’d be in awe!
Brimming with confidence, feeling ALL the feelings and convinced you’ve all the answers? Then Athene is the goddess for you. And Debut or Taylor Swift, the album.
Who sprang fully formed from the head of the king of the gods, filled with determination, wisdom and fight? The goddess Athene, of course, which is why she matches 16-year-old Taylor Swift, when she burst onto the country music scene as a fully formed singer-songwriter
with her debut album. Neither goddess holds back with their anger – watch them strike a match on all their wasted time, if you’ve wronged them you’re ‘just another picture to burn’. As they’ve grown up in the public eye, both have revealed their strategic genius and their
dexterity – one with weaving, one with lyrics.
Athene can certainly ‘start a fight just to feel something’: just ask the Trojans, or indeed her uncle, Poseidon.
This doesn’t mean there’s no vulnerability to Athene, or to Taylor. They can often be found on The Outside, even
among other gods and goddesses.
‘I’m alone, on my own, and that’s all I know / I’ll be strong, I’ll be wrong, but life goes on…’
